A disc is a soft donut shaped part of the spine resting between the back bones (vertebrae). The inside is called the nucleus populous, and the outside is called the annulus. After an injury, the soft inside can sometimes come under increased pressure and that pressure can cause the disc to bulge outward. Or if he pressure is great enough the bulge can break open or tear which can further increase the size of the bulge or cause the inside material to leak out. The outside part, called the annulus, might have tear in it, or can be weak for some reason which will cause a budge or a break in the weak spot. Keep in mind that the term “herniation” is sometimes used to describe a bulge in the disc rather a tear or break in the annul us where the inside material is actually leaking out. That is why it is important to describe exactly what is happening with the disc when possible.
