I am frequently asked by clients whether their insurance rates will increase if they are in a car accident.  The answer depends upon whether the accident was their fault.  Generally, if your are in a car accident and the accident was not your fault, then you will not see an increase in your rates.  The insurance company will review the police report, and medical records, if any to made a determination about whether the accident was your fault.  The medical records are reviewed to determine the extent of the injury.  If the accident is deemed to be your fault, then the amount of the injury caused, and the general severity of the accident will determine the how much your rates will increase.

Therefore, if the accident was not your fault, you should not hesitate to report the claim.  Your should not fear a rate increase when the accident was not your fault.
