The National Labor Relations Board Regional Director in Chicago ruled recently that student football players at Northwestern are "employees" under the National Labor Relations Act, and as employees, they have the right to unionize.  

The battle of employee status and union rights is about the huge money made by colleges and universitis from big time college sports.

The final result in not certain because of potential appeals and further litigation in Courts.  

But the fact remains that litigation over the rights to profits from college sports is likely going to significantly alter the landscape of college sports.
