The question is whether your company can fire you if you miss work due to car accident in Connecticut.  Assume you are in a car accident in New Haven, Connecticut and you are rear ended, and injure your shoulder.  You are forced to miss six weeks from work due to your shoulder surgery at Yale, New Haven hospital in New Haven.  Can you be fired if you miss the six weeks from work?

The answer will depend upon several factors including whether you have company benefits are available to you, whether the Family & Medical Leave Act applies, and how long you will be out of work.   But there is certainly no rule that says that a person’s job is guaranteed if they miss work due to a car crash.   So, the short answer is yes, you can be fired.  If you are injured in a car crash, and might miss work, and it is, therefore, possible that you will lose your job.

The best way to protect yourself is to be proactive, and understand whether your company offers leave benefits.  If not, double check whether the FMLA applies to your situation.
